How we rank

One score out of 100. Eight things go into it.

The same formula for every company, built only from public information: Google reviews, the owner's replies, and the State of Michigan license register. Open any company on a list and you'll see every point, earned or missed.

  • 35
    Reputation
The Google rating, adjusted so 5 stars from 6 reviews can't outrank 4.9 from 200.
  • 15
    Credentials and record
An active Michigan license, checked against the state register and linked to the record.
  • 12
    Review volume
How many reviews, on a curve so the biggest company can't run away with it.
  • 10
    Recent performance
The rating over the last two years, so a company that got better or worse shows it.
  • 8
    Momentum
New reviews in the last 12 months. Coasting on old ones scores lower.
  • 8
    Responsiveness
Whether the owner answers reviews, how fast, and whether they answer the critical ones.
  • 7
    Review patterns
Bursts of reviews, reviewers with no history, or text that repeats word for word cost points.
  • 5
    Longevity
Years in business, from the state license date.

Who gets ranked. Every company in the trade within the list’s radius (5 to 10 miles) with at least 5 Google reviews, up to the 50 most-reviewed in busy areas. The rest are named, not scored.

Who can't be in the top 10. Any company whose state license is lapsed, suspended, or inactive. It stays on the page, marked.

When a check is pending. Those points are left out of the math, never counted as zero, and the card says so.

How we're different

Most directories work for the contractor. This one works for you.

The sites you already know make their money from the companies they list. That shapes what you see. We don't take a dollar from anyone on a list, so the only thing a company can do to rank higher is be better.

Questions
Does Referrally cost anything?

No. It's free for homeowners, and contractors don't pay to be listed. A company can't pay to be added, moved up, or made to look better.

How often are the rankings updated?

Reviews are re-read and licenses re-checked on a regular schedule, and every card shows the date of both. When a score changes, the card shows how much and since when.

A company I know is missing. Why?

We score the 50 most-reviewed companies in the trade within each list’s radius (5 to 10 miles, tighter where companies are dense) that have at least 5 reviews, and name every other one we found without a score. Companies with fewer than 5 reviews are listed as too new to score. If one is missing entirely, use “Something wrong? Tell us” on any card and a person will look.

Can a contractor fix a mistake on their card?

Yes. Every card has a “Something wrong? Tell us” link. Corrections are reviewed by a person, and a correction never costs anything.

Do you verify the reviews?

We read every Google review but don't verify individual reviewers, and we never hide a review because of its rating. What we check is the pattern: whether a company's reviews look like its neighbours' in who wrote them, when they arrived, and whether any repeat word for word.

Why these towns and trades so far?

We started with roofers in one county to get the method right, then spread one county and one trade at a time. The search box above tells us where people are looking, and that decides where we go next.

Coming next

Roofers, painters, gutter companies, HVAC companies, plumbers, electricians, landscapers and car detailers came first. Your town could be next.
